BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraq’s parliament approved on Tuesday a new electoral law, a key demand of protesters to make elections fairer, but political deadlock is still holding up the selection of an interim prime minister, threatening renewed unrest. Mass protests have gripped Iraq since Oct. 1 and protesters, most of them young, are demanding an overhaul of a political system they see as profoundly corrupt and keeping most Iraqis in poverty. More than 450 people have been killed. “In the name…
Thousands of Iraqis took to the streets Sunday ahead of a midnight deadline to name an interim prime minister. Anti-government rallies have rocked Baghdad and the Shi'ite-majority South since October, protesting against corruption, poor services, and a lack of jobs. Protesters have called for an end to the political system imposed after the U.S. invasion in 2003. Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi's resigned Friday. President Barham Salih and parliament have since missed several deadlines to appoint a new prime minister.…

Iraqi political leaders faced a midnight deadline Thursday to choose a new prime minister to run a country shaken by months of unprecedented street protests that have left hundreds dead. If parliament fails to propose a candidate from inter-party negotiations to replace outgoing Adel Abdel Mahdi, then President Barham Saleh has the right to appoint a premier himself. But if lawmakers do not approve his choice and the post remains vacant at midnight, then the constitution will place Saleh himself…

The report comes amid a string of targeted assassinations and arrests of civil activists and journalists that have fostered fear among protesters. An officer in charge of security in the Iraqi capital Baghdad was replaced yesterday, two days after an attack on anti-government protesters that witnesses said killed at least 16 people. General Abdul Hussein al-Tamimi has replaced General Qais al-Mohammedwai as chief of the government’s security service Baghdad Operations, the official news agency INA reported, citing an unnamed official. The replacement was due to al-Mohamedwai’s health, the agency added without elaborating. On Friday, unknown gunmen fired from cars at anti-government protesters…
WASHINGTON — The Trump administration issued economic sanctions on Friday against three Iraqi militia leaders whose fighters American officials said were under Iran’s orders when they attacked protesters in Iraq. The penalties, which restrict travel to the United States and freeze American-held assets, will likely have little direct impact on the militiamen. But the move could force Iraq to choose between either shunning its Iranian benefactors or defying American demands to protect demonstrators as the Shiite-led government faces a deepening political crisis. The…
“The deliberate killing of unarmed protesters by armed elements is nothing less than an atrocity against the people of Iraq,” said Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, the Secretary-General's Special Representative in the crisis-gripped country.  She also urged Iraqi Armed Forces to spare no effort to protect the peaceful protesters from violence by armed elements operating outside State control, and at the same time called on peaceful protesters to cooperate constructively to ensure the peaceful protests can be duly protected.  New reports from the region put Friday's…
